Supporting Local Growers And Thinking Global Can Still Be Loving One’s Neighbours!

“Third-generation growers from Pomona Valley in Shepparton, strive to supply good quality flavourful peaches, plums and nectarines and apricots. With fruit blooming in the latter part of the season, it has the benefit of longer days in a warmer climate, so is very juicy and sweet!” (See AUSummerfruit, 2 Feb, 2022.)
Warwick Long of ABC Rural wrote on 27 April 2021, that “Four family-run orchards have joined with foreign investors in huge Goulburn Valley deal”. A Canadian fund, the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, which manages more than $200 billion in assets around the world, has used its Australian subsidiary, AustOn Corp, to invest in the merged entity – which will be called Pomona Valley. The family-run orchard businesses involved are the Varapodio family’s Oakmoor Orchards, Turnbull Bro’s Orchards, Pickworth Orchards and the Hall family’s Chatswood Farm. All are located west of Shepparton at Ardmona, Tatura, Mooroopna and Toolamba….”.

Christian farmer, Peter Hall told ABC’s Warwick Long, “It’s probably in the top 10 horticultural fruit-growing businesses in Australia… The world is a big place and it needs a large company to take advantage”. “The four family businesses are famous names in Goulburn Valley fruit growing and have competed against each other for much of their history… Farmers by nature are competitive and these are friendly competitors over the years and it has taken a lot of work”.
Lynda Kiernan of Global AgInvesting Media 27 April 2021, states that “Rock Varapodio [is] at the helm in the role of general manager. He told Country News that, “It’s about having scale for those export opportunities… but it’s also about being able to service domestic markets a lot better with good, long lines of supply.. And looking to the future”. Waseem at the EarlyNews 28 April, 2021, says, “The new company will most definitely be huge”.
