Christian Leader Sentenced to 13 Years in Bhutan Prison

A senior leader in the underground church in Bhutan has been arrested and sentenced to 13 years in prison, according to sources on the ground.

A Bhutanese Christian, who worked as a senior leader in the local underground church, was arrested and sentenced to prison because of his faith. “He was arrested for an unrelated crime,” a senior leader familiar with the situation reported on Monday. There are no criminal charges for being a Christian in Bhutan, so other charges were used to imprison the believer.

Due to the situation in Bhutan, the Christian in prison and the church leadership are not able to share details due to security of the family. The Christian believer has children that could be persecuted by the government.

BTJ has a special scholarship for children of those persecuted for their Christian faith. The BTJ Martyrs Scholarship Fund helps to pay for the education of children suffering because of persecution against their Christian parents.
